Today is Groundhog Day and Sir Walter Wally makes the list for the top Groundhogs to watch. Today at noon, he will emerge on Bicentennial Plaza in front of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Will he see his shadow? According to his handlers, Sir Walter Wally is right about 47 percent of the time.
According to folklore:
*If it’s cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early;
*If it’s sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will continue for six more weeks.
The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where crowds as large as 40,000 gather to celebrate the holiday since at least 1886.
